"Advising Diversification Strategies in Coffee Systems of Small Producers in Mesoamerica"
We analyze how different diversification strategies affect food security, climate change, resilience, livelihoods and gender equity at the household, community, regional scales and how it relates to the sustainability of coffee-based agri-food systems .
We focus on participatory action research (PAR) that will facilitate the incorporation of the voices of multiple parties in the research design, execution, analysis, interpretation and dissemination of results.
Coffee growing
There are 25 million small-scale coffee farmers around the world, who for several generations have integrated the production of trees and honey in their coffee plantations. Incorporating vegetables in their fields (corn, beans, squash as a base) and integrating a variety of crops and animal husbandry (eg chickens) around their home diversify their agriculture.
Diversification
With these practices, coffee growers define their ways of life and family means of subsistence. Different forms of agroecological diversification affect food security, gender equity, sources of income, and community resilience.
